Enjoy A Wee Dram

Donald L Reid writes:

It may have gone largely unnoticed, but on 11 September 2008, we reach a very special milestone - the 50th anniversary of the death of a dearly loved poet, RWS. Perhaps all those who love his poetry will join together on that date and perhaps read some of their own favourite works and those of Scots descent (and doubtless many others too) will enjoy a wee dram to remember a true poetic genius.

The great man himself passed away. There are many celebrations of Roberts life this coming Sept 11th throughout the world. How could there not be?

One of note is Kilwinning Town North Ayrshire Scotland UK. The childhood home of Robert.

Jim Miller, Secretary of the Kilwinning Preservation Society, writes:

As far as the Robert W. Service exhibition at the Kilwinning Abbey Tower Heritage Centre is concerned: I recently received a phone call saying that several full size prints of Robert W. Service were available after the demolition of a local Academy. The discovery of these prints coincided with the 50th Anniversary of the poet's death which will be on 11th September. These prints will be on show in the Heritage Centre until the end of season.

Christine's Sam McGee

A brilliantly atmospheric travelogue in music and words, Christine Hanson’s The Cremation of Sam McGee celebrates both the Scottish ancestry of Yukon poet Robert W. Service and his greatest creation, the irascible, ill-fated and fascinating Sam McGee.

Christine Hanson’s musical adaptation of Service’s famous poem travels in the imagination to the frozen Yukon frontier where the cellist’s original compositions take the listener across the snow in tandem with this quirky, tragicomic tale.

Narrated with conspicuous relish by Michael Marra, this interpretation of
The Cremation of Sam McGee is a chilling, enthralling and entertaining work.

The music that accompanies the narration is played by the Sam McGee
ensemble, which features Christine on cello and eight of Scotland's finest traditional musicians. A must have in any Service enthusiast’s collection.

Rob Adams - Glasgow Herald

Visit Christine Hanson
'The Shooting Of Dan McGrew' arguably Robert W Services best known poem has been parodied many times.
