My Predecessor

My Predecessor

"Dear David died a year ago",
    Said my sweet wife to me;
"I'd like to shed a tear or so
    For him, if you agree."
"A very worthy thought," said I;
    "In fact I'll go with you. . . .
Poor David! it is tough to die
    When one is forty-two."

So to the cemetery we
    With sober faces went,
And I looked glumly on as she
    Above his tombstone bent.
At first with her I sympathized,
    For I knew David well,
Then suddenly I realized
    I hated him like hell.

Why did he have to go and die

    And leave his spouse to me?
A happy bachelor was I,
    Exuberantly free.
Elaine is fond beyond belief,
    Yet as we homeward hied,
I was was the one who sobbed with grief
    Because poor David died.
