We Are a People Few and Far Away

We are a people few and far away...

Written on the flyleaf on a copy of Songs of a Sourdough
which he presented. Dated: Dawson, 27th August, 1909.

We are a people few and far away
Little our lives are crystalled with delight
For though the sunshine of the long, long day
Loometh the shadow of the long, long night.

You have come and seen and gone away
O may your memories of us be bright!
May your life-season be the long. long day
Unhaunted by the shadow of the night.
