This poem is often wrongly thought to be by Robert W Service. It is published here to the memory of Hugh Antoine D'Arcy, it's rightful father.

Archive 1Published by Webmaster on 2003/9/6 (45742 reads)RS 4-21-02 I have visited this site before and made an entry at that time. My purpose in writing now is to inform the person whose comment is identified as C 4-3-02 that the poem "Big Wicked Bill" was not written by Robert Service but by Stuart Hamblin and recited by him on a recording he made for Columbia Records entitled The Spell Of The Yukon. Stuart was a singer, song writer, actor and had a daily radio program in Los Angeles for 20 years. richardjstanford@aol.com BH 4-21-02 While on an epic canoe trip to the tundra of Northwest Territories, Canada, "The Men That Don't Fit In" was read by the guide. I wept aloud as I felt he wrote it to me. I've loved his poetry from that time on. It just makes me more proud to be kith and kin of other fine Scots. I come from fine Scotsmen, I am of the Stewarts of Appin. PM 4-10-02 For the Third Time ... Kilwinning, Scotland ... where Robert penned his first poem will be holding a Dinner in his honour ... the venue - St Michael's Academy Great Hall; the date - 6 September 2002; the price - £25 pp.
NED 4-4-02 I worked at a pack station in the Sierras in the summer of 1958 where a guest recited many of Service's poems. I have been hooked ever since. ned100@qwest.net RW 4-3-02 A high school literature teacher introduced the class to Robert W. Service poetry during the late 1950's by way of a textbook and an LP recording done by the artist Stewart Hamblin. I still have the recordings - transferred to magnetic tape while in the military in W.Germany. If you have never heard Stewart Hamblin's rendition of The cremation of Sam Mcgee and Dangerous Dan McGrew, plus the other poems put to music (written and recorded by Hamblin), then you have missed a great treat. I'd share them with you but transmission via email would take several hours. C 4-3-02 Have you ever heard of a Robert Service poem about a lead dog named Big Wicked Bill? JR 3-24-02 Grand entertainment for all ages! ES 3-20-02 I'm so glad to have discovered this site. I was talking about "Bessie's Boil" to someone today and said I wished I could find it somewhere. Lo and behold, I had no problem finding it on a search engine.
